How Much Sound & Lighting Does a Large Wedding Need?

Zorawar Shukla

A practical guide to sizing your sound system and lighting design for weddings of 150+ guests.

Sound and lighting are the two most underestimated line items in wedding planning, and they’re also the two that guests notice most when they’re wrong. For a wedding of 150 guests or more, you generally need a professional line array or point-source system sized to the venue’s ceiling height and materials, not just guest count. A ballroom with high ceilings and hard floors needs more coverage than an outdoor tent of the same size. Lighting should be planned in layers: ambient uplighting for the room, focused lighting for key moments like the first dance, and dance floor lighting that can scale with the energy of the night. Working with a team that handles both together, rather than sourcing sound and lighting separately, avoids the technical and timing issues that come from vendors who aren’t used to coordinating with each other.
